Part 4: A Student’s View of Real-World PR

This is the fourth in a series of seven blog posts reproduced from a Baylor University PR class assignment by student Andrea Aguirre. Something that provides a challenge in public relations according to Mrs. Anderson is generating and securing the stories. In PR, it is important to already have a secure framework of the story before you present it to a reporter. In the past, throwing out an idea or opinion might have been sufficient. In today’s world, stories require photos, factual proven content and people who can validate your story at the onset of a pitch in order to even stand a chance of it being developed. This makes the job of a PR agent very time consuming which can work against your favor when trying to pitch information to one reporter working for their source, while losing the time and opportunity to pitch to another reporter from another source. With this scenario, I can see where it is important to size up your audience and focus on what it is you are trying to pitch. Knowing who will be interested in the story you have can help focus in on what sources you can spend your time in working with in order to get your story out to the best possible audience.
